A graduation ceremony for 230 medical students was held amidst the ruins of al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza, what was once the Palestinian territory’s largest hospital. An unparalleled display of determination and resilience as the doctors, called themselves a “Humanity Cohort,” who completed their medical certifications under the shade of Israel’s two years of relentless war on Gaza.
How tough it is to try to study for the hardest exam of your life while your world is literally falling apart around you. Most of us stress out when the Wi-Fi drops or we have a mountain of homework, but medical students in Gaza are out here redefining what it means to actually “level up” under pressure.
Their graduation isn’t just about getting a degree; it’s a masterclass in faith, resilience, and refusing to give up in the face of a brutal genocide.
More Than a Degree
Buildings can be knocked down, and schools can be closed, but you can’t “delete” someone’s purpose. For these students, their success is a massive reminder of their Imaan. It’s like a spark, you can try to smother it, but it’s designed to reignite no matter what.
Sabr is a Verb, Not a Feeling
We often think of ṣabr as just sitting around and waiting for things to get better. These students proved it’s actually the opposite. For them, ṣabr is active perseverance. Despite losing family members, being displaced, and dealing with constant grief, they kept showing up. They served their community while they studied. They didn’t just “survive” the trauma; they pushed through it with “flying colors.”
