Most of you try to balance who you are with who you want to be. Whether it is managing your reputation at school, staying true to your values, or improving your Imaan, finding the right role model is a major part of growing up.
While everyone is busy chasing the influencers, athletes, or musicians, the story of Umar ibn al-Khattab RA reflects what it means to be genuine, loyal, and truly great.
The “I love you more than myself” moment
The Prophet (ﷺ) was holding the hand of `Umar bin Al-Khattab RA. `Umar said to Him, “O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! You are dearer to me than everything except my own self.”
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “No, by Him in Whose Hand my soul is, (you will not have complete faith) till I am dearer to you than your own self.” Then `Umar said to him, “However, now, by Allah, you are dearer to me than my own self.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Now, O `Umar, (now you are a believer). Sahih al-Bukhari 6632
Umar RA didn’t fake it or give a cliché answer to sound perfect! And then the Prophet (pbuh) told him that to reach peak Iman, his love for the messenger has to override his own.
Core Significance
The Perfection of Faith: This hadith establishes that having complete faith requires a Muslim to prioritize the love of the Prophet ﷺ over their own ego and self-interest.
Umar’s Sincerity: It demonstrates Umar ibn al-Khattab’s deep spiritual devotion as he swiftly adjusted his perspective upon realizing the requirement of complete faith.
Instinct vs. Choice
It is not easy to flip an emotional switch to love someone more than yourself, right? So how did Umar RA change his mind on the spot and reply, “Now, you are more beloved to me than my own self”?
An Islamic scholar named Abu Sulayman al-Khattabi broke it down perfectly:
- Instinctive Love: The automatic love you have for yourself. You cannot control it.
- Chosen Love: A conscious choice based on logic and gratitude.
Umar RA realized that without the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ guidance, he would be totally lost in this life and the next. The Prophet ﷺ endured ridicule, boycotts, and warfare to pass the truth down to us. When Umar RA weighed his own ego against that kind of love and sacrifice, the choice became instant.
When the Universe Echoes Your Thoughts
Umar RA was no ordinary follower; his mind was so sharp and his heart so pure that the Prophet ﷺ once said, “Allah has placed the truth upon Umar’s tongue and heart.”
It gets crazier. Umar RA himself narrated in Sahih Al-Bukhari 402 that there are three specific times his ideas matched the divine revelation:
- The Prayer Spot: He suggested praying behind the station of Ibrahim (Maqam Ibrahim). Soon after, a Quranic verse commanded exactly that. And Allah swt revealed in Surah Baqarah, ayah 125
وَإِذْ جَعَلْنَا ٱلْبَيْتَ مَثَابَةًۭ لِّلنَّاسِ وَأَمْنًۭا وَٱتَّخِذُوا۟ مِن مَّقَامِ إِبْرَٰهِـۧمَ مُصَلًّۭى ۖ وَعَهِدْنَآ إِلَىٰٓ إِبْرَٰهِـۧمَ وَإِسْمَـٰعِيلَ أَن طَهِّرَا بَيْتِىَ لِلطَّآئِفِينَ وَٱلْعَـٰكِفِينَ وَٱلرُّكَّعِ ٱلسُّجُودِ
And ˹remember˺ when We made the Sacred House1 a centre and a sanctuary for the people ˹saying˺, “˹You may˺ take the standing-place of Abraham as a site of prayer.” And We entrusted Abraham and Ishmael to purify My House for those who circle it, who meditate in it, and who bow and prostrate themselves ˹in prayer˺.
- Privacy & Modesty: He suggested the Prophet’s wives wear the hijab for protection and respect. The verses of hijab were then revealed, in Surah Al-Ahzab, ayah 53
ۚ وَإِذَا سَأَلْتُمُوهُنَّ مَتَـٰعًۭا فَسْـَٔلُوهُنَّ مِن وَرَآءِ حِجَابٍۢ ۚ ذَٰلِكُمْ أَطْهَرُ لِقُلُوبِكُمْ وَقُلُوبِهِنَّ ۚ
And when you ˹believers˺ ask his wives for something, ask them from behind a barrier. This is purer for your hearts and theirs.
- Real Talk: When there was family drama, Umar RA gave a strict warning to the Prophet’s wives about their behavior. Later, a verse dropped using the same words Umar used. Surah Tahrim, ayah 5
عَسَىٰ رَبُّهُۥٓ إِن طَلَّقَكُنَّ أَن يُبْدِلَهُۥٓ أَزْوَٰجًا خَيْرًۭا مِّنكُنَّ مُسْلِمَـٰتٍۢ مُّؤْمِنَـٰتٍۢ قَـٰنِتَـٰتٍۢ تَـٰٓئِبَـٰتٍ عَـٰبِدَٰتٍۢ سَـٰٓئِحَـٰتٍۢ ثَيِّبَـٰتٍۢ وَأَبْكَارًۭا
Perhaps, if he were to divorce you ˹all˺, his Lord would replace you with better wives who are submissive ˹to Allah˺, faithful ˹to Him˺, devout, repentant, dedicated to worship and fasting—previously married or virgins.
The Prophet ﷺ even said that if there were to be a prophet after him (which there isn’t), it would have been Umar. He RA was inspired by the truth.
Time for a Feed Cleanse?
You get caught up hyping celebrities who don’t even know you exist, people who have never offered a single prostration to their Creator. A lot of us scroll past athletes, gamers, and influencers and think, “that’s my dream, that’s who I want to be like.” Nothing wrong with admiring skill. But ask yourself:
- Has their life been described as carrying truth, not followers, only truth? No.
- Have they ever traded their comfort to carry people’s burden? No.
- Are they guaranteed Paradise? No.
Umar RA gave up status, safety, and comfort for the truth. You don’t need to reinvent greatness, it is already part of your heritage! You are the next generation of a legacy built by giants like Umar Ibn Khattab.
