The Night the Heavens Opened…

In sci-fi videos or games, you can instantly warp across the map? Can you do that in real life, traveling a month’s distance in a single night?

This is exactly what happened during Isra wa Al-Mi’raj. It wasn’t some hack; it was a demonstration that the laws of physics aren’t as rigid as we think.

What happened on one of the most epic nights in history is still relevant to your life!

What is Isra?

Isra is “Night Journey.” It refers to the night Prophet Muhammad ﷺ traveled from Makkah to Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem and back in one night. Back then, this trip took a whole month on a camel.

How is that even possible? Let’s understand this this way.. You play games on your PS5. It was developed by a game developer. They create the code that makes gravity work or players kicking and crushing each other at a certain speed. But because they wrote the code, they can also change it, mod it, or teleport a character whenever they want.

Similarly, Allah (SWT) created the universe and the laws of physics (time, speed, distance). He isn’t trapped by them, He controls them. Isra was Allah SWT showing that He is the Developer of the whole universe, and reality works however He wills.

What is Mi’raj?

Mi’raj means “ascension” or going up like taking an elevator to the penthouse.

On that same night, the Prophet ﷺ didn’t just travel horizontally to Jerusalem; he traveled vertically into the heavens.

  • The Sight: Allah swt lifted the “curtain” between the physical world and the spiritual world.
  • The Meeting: The Prophet ﷺ met earlier Prophets, saw the reality of Angels, and witnessed Jannah (Paradise) and Jahannam (Hellfire).
The Analogy

You all think you’re pretty smart. You use logic and science to figure out how the world works. But your brains have a limit.

Your brains already have an internal sense of direction. You can figure out landmarks and general areas on your own. But when you’re going to a new location, you need Google Maps.

  • Your Brain: Can figure out the basics.
  • Google Maps (Revelation): Warns you about things you can’t see, like a crash miles ahead, a hidden speed trap, or the fastest route.

The Qur’an and Sunnah are the Google Maps for your life. Your logic can’t answer big questions like “What happens after I die?” or “What is my actual purpose?” That’s where Revelation steps in to guide you when your logic hits a wall.

It Wasn’t Just Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Every major Prophet had their own “Mi’raj” moment, a special time of intense closeness to Allah swt.

  • Prophet Yaqub (AS): Had a vision of a ladder stretching from earth to heaven with angels moving up and down. And Allah swt standing at the top.
  • Prophet Musa (AS): Had his moment on Mount Tur, where he spoke directly to Allah swt.
Your Mi’raj: Salah

And the coolest part is, you have your own Mi’raj 5 times a day.

The Prophet ﷺ said that Salah is the Mi’raj of a Muslim. When you stand for prayer, you are hitting “Log Off” on the world. You mute the notifications, ignore the drama, and disconnect from people to connect directly with the Creator.

  • The Sweet Spot: When you are in Sujood with your forehead on the ground, that is physically the lowest you can be, but spiritually the highest you can be. That is the moment you are closest to Allah swt.
The “Receipts” (Evidence in the Qur’an)

This event is so major it’s documented in two different Surahs.

Surah Al-Isra (The Night Journey) This Surah confirms the journey from Makkah to Jerusalem. It’s also where the “New Rules” were laid down:

  • Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was declared the Prophet for the entire world (not just a specific region).
  • The command for the five daily prayers was given directly during this ascension.

Surah An-Najm (The Star) These verses (14-18) describe the visuals:

“He certainly saw some of his Lord’s greatest signs.” It describes the Sidrat al-Muntaha (The Lote Tree), which marks the boundary of the heavens where no creation can pass except the Prophet ﷺ on that night.

Try This Today

The next time you stand up to pray and you’re feeling rushed or distracted, stop for a second. Remind yourself: “I am not just doing a chore. I am entering my personal Mi’raj to speak to the One who controls the universe.”

Challenge: In your next Sujood, take 10 extra seconds to ask Allah swt for the one thing your heart wants most. You’re speaking to Him, and He’s listening! SubhanAllah
