Ever Closer, Never There: A Guide to Our False Pursuits

Untitled Design 57 1024x682

Ever felt you’re stuck in an infinite scroll on Instagram, or you’ve spent five hours straight on PlayStation only to realize you feel… kind of empty?

That feeling isn’t an accident. It’s the modern version of a desert mirage, a “trick” that looks like water from a distance, but when you get closer, it vanishes into thin air!

The Mirage in Your Pocket

In the desert, people chase mirages for days because they’re desperate for water.  Today, the world has turned distraction into a science.

The Qur’an calls this “Lahw” — vain entertainment that distracts us from our actual purpose.  It’s not just a hobby anymore; it’s a multi-billion dollar industry designed to “colonize” your thoughts. From FIFA and PS5 to Reels and Shorts, these can become “weapons of mass occupation” that keep us from focusing on Allah swt and the real-world struggles of the Ummah.

 A quiet wake-up call

Allah swt tells us in the Qur’an, in Surah Al-Ankabut,

“This worldly life is no more than play and amusement. But the Hereafter is indeed the real life, if only they knew.”

If you had to choose between a plastic, remote-controlled toy car and a Bugatti Chiron, which one would you save up for?

  • The World (Dunya): The plastic toy.
  • The Hereafter (Akhirah): The actual Bugatti. Most of us are spending all our energy on the toy while the real deal is right in front of us.

When Does Fun Become a Problem?

Islam doesn’t want you to live a boring life. The Prophet (peace be upon him) raced with his wife, joked with friends, and encouraged sports like archery.  Recreation is fine until it becomes a distraction.

“From FIFA and PS5 to Reels and Shorts, these can become “weapons of mass occupation” that keep us from focusing on Allah and the real-world struggles of the Ummah.”

Ask yourself these 4 questions:

  1. Do I know every player’s stats but struggle to read the Qur’an with Tajweed?

  2. Does a football match or a video game make me miss Salah?
  3. Do I feel “hype” over a tournament victory but feel nothing for the suffering in Palestine or Sudan?
  4. Does this hobby occupy my heart more than the remembrance of Allah swt?

 The “Strategy” of Distraction

Why does this matter? Because when we are distracted, three things happen:

  • Loss of Awareness: While we’re debating who the “GOAT” is, we lose track of the forces shaping our future and oppressing our people.
  • Identity Theft: We start looking to fashion influencers and celebrities for “impression” instead of the Qur’an and Sunnah.
  • No Urgency: We get “hypnotized” by trends, so we don’t have the energy to solve the huge challenges facing Muslims today.

 Upgrade Yourself

You weren’t created to chase illusions. You were created for Jannah. Here is how you start:

  • Level Up Your Knowledge: Study the Qur’an as a guide, not just a ritual. Learn about history and current events so you aren’t fooled by media narratives.
  • Respect Your Time: Time is the literal “currency” of your life. Once an hour is gone, you can never buy it back.
  • A Quick Self-Check: Be honest about what makes you stressed? Missing a prayer, or missing an episode? Your answer shows your true priorities.
  • Tech is a Tool, Not a Master: Use your phone intentionally.  Don’t let the algorithm choose who you are.
  • Use Your Skills: Allah gave you unique talents (writing, coding, speaking, leading). Use them for things that last.

In Surah Nazi’at, Allah swt tells us that those who prioritize this world find their refuge in Hell, but those who control their souls find their home in Jannah.

Look at your “Screen Time” settings right now. Which app is eating your life, and what’s one “real-world” thing you can do today to reclaim that time?
