Are you a follower of the crowd or a leader when the world seems like a total mess? The word “leadership” sounds like a mouthful, but it’s the secret sauce to becoming an independent thinker who cares about making the world better. It’s the difference between holding an opinion and having an impact!
Living with Integrity
When was the last time you were totally alone at home? Did you still follow the rules?
There’s a famous story about a Muslim girl during the caliphate of Umar Ibn Al-Khattab (RA), in which she was telling her mother not to mix water into the milk to increase the profit. The daughter refused malpractice by saying that the Leader of the Believers had forbidden such practice.
The mother replied, “Umar (RA) is not here to see us.”
The daughter responded: “If Umar (RA) is not watching, then the Lord of Umar is watching.”
Why? Because she did not want to take even a tiny benefit from a trust (an amanah) she was entrusted with.
- No Police Needed: She didn’t have a CCTV camera watching her.
- Internal GPS: Her values were so strong that she led herself to do it against her mother.
- The Aim: That’s the level of independent thinking we’re talking about. Doing the right thing when no one is watching.
The Three Keys to Leadership
If you want to lead the Ummah or the least want lead your own life well, you need these three things:
- Clarity: Know the “why.” No excuse of “because my parents told me.” Know your evidence and the rationale behind your beliefs.
- Purity: Filter out the noise. Recognize when you’re being influenced by secular ideas that don’t align with your core Islamic values.
- Crystallization: Figure out the “How.” How do you actually apply your values to real-life problems like scrolling through social media, relationships, buying and selling, or going to school?
The “Lesser of Two Evils” Trap
In life people often say, “Just pick the least bad option.” But if both options go against your values, why settle?
- Standard vs. Strategy: Real leadership isn’t about playing games or being sneaky. It’s about being open and standing firm on what is right, even if it’s difficult.
- The Warehouse Analogy: What would you do if you woke up one day and found yourself in a giant warehouse? The first thing you would ask is, “Why am I here?” Your answer changes everything you do next. If your purpose is to please Allah swt, your daily moves will look very different than if you’re there just to collect coins.
Breaking the Divide in Your Head
We live in a world divided by lines on a map, drawn by people who wanted to keep us divided.
- The Logic Fail: In one place, you’re “smart enough” to make adult decisions at 18; drive 15 minutes across a border, and suddenly you’re “too young” until you’re 21!
- The Unity Flex: Intellectual leadership means seeing past these artificial walls. It means realizing that a student in Japan, a teen in the US, and a youth in Gaza are part of the same team.
How to be Better Today
You don’t need a fancy title to be a leader. You need to serve the people, and solve their problems. You can start right now by decoding your reality:
- Question Everything: Next time you see a TikTok trend, a news story, or a school rule, ask: “Is this based on my values (Islam) or something else?”
- Practice “Crystallization”: Think of one problem in your neighborhood (like theft or older people feeling lonely). How would a leader with pure, clear values solve it?
Call to Action: Pick one thing you do every day like checking your phone or talking to friends. How would that change if you treated it as a trust (an amanah)?
What is one “popular” idea you’ve been told to believe that you’re starting to question?
